Alice’s eyes popped open, and she gasped for air. It seemed Mars had turned crooked until she realized she was on her back. She leaned up, confused and disoriented.

Then the haze lifted, and everything rushed back.

Moments after they had locked out the creature, the ship had collided with the ground. Alice and Stalls had been thrown off their feet. Alice faintly remembered looking at Stalls, who had been screaming something, but Alice couldn’t hear her over the terrible noise of metal tearing. She had felt the sudden jolt as they came to a quick stop, and she had been thrown against the wall.

At that moment—as the ship crashed—she’d been sure she was dead.

But she still lived.

The pain in her chest as she breathed was testament to that.

An equipment locker that was bolted to the wall had torn off and fallen onto her legs. Groaning loudly, Alice used the extra strength from her CAG and pushed it off. Then, with some difficulty, she pushed to her feet.

“Stalls? Stalls?” she yelled as she looked around the docking bay, wincing as she turned her neck. Her whole body was stiff and sore.

The floor was crumbled and broken, and jagged pieces of metal stuck up at random. The cabin lights sparked and flickered

“Here!” Stalls held up the hand that was missing fingers. Blood oozed down her forearm. “I’m right here!” Her voice sounded weak and pained.

The impact had smashed a support wall, which, in turn, had crushed a bench seat onto Stalls.

Alice limped over, her knee burning. The CAG might have saved her whole leg from being twisted off.

“Hold on,” Alice cried out as she closed in.

“Sure thing,” Stalls said, mocking calm with dark humor.

My God. . .

Alice held her lips from whispering it out loud. The pilot looked to be only barely surviving. Her helmet was cracked, but looked to have held. However, one of her sleeves had been torn completely apart, which compromised the whole suit against the atmosphere of Mars.

The creature’s bristled tongue had ripped the sleeve and tore Stalls’s fingers off with a lick.

“Fucker got me,” Stalls said, smirking when she noticed the look on Alice’s face. She twisted her hand in the air. “Piece of shit took my trigger finger and my fuck you finger.” She looked closer, her eyes arching up in disappointment. “I liked my fuck you finger.”

“Hold on, Stalls, I’m going to get you out of there.” Alice looked around, making sure she could carefully move the bench.

“Why bother?” Stalls looked away. “He got me, Winters. Mother fucker got me. It’s inside me now.”

“No!” Alice spat. “We don’t know that!”

Stalls huffed and shook her head. “Maybe you don’t, but I do. I saw what happened to Bennie. . . Burns.” Her face tightened as she shook her head. “I don’t want that, goddammit. I don’t want that.”

“Listen to me—”

“It’s always bullshit with you, Winters. You’re always—”

“I said fucking listen!” Alice yelled. “I saw Smith. I saw him in the medical bay. He was strapped down, but he didn’t change.
